Beauty in Death
Beauty in Death

How could Horror possibly have a positive message?

In horror there are various emotions and situations that are explored. Death is the one that usually comes to mind when someone asks what horror is all about, the 2nd is fear, and the third is revenge. However, things we don't typically associate with horror are beauty, positivity, and comfort. I know what you're thinking, How does scaring people or killing people equate to beauty, comfort, and positivity. In these acts there really aren't any.

The Beauty in Death

Death doesn't have to be an ugly thing that happens to us, and it can mean different things not just a physical death. Death, in horror and life, can be another form of transformation. As we grow older each year, we grow and transform ourselves. We're always evolving. This is where the beauty of death comes in. The death of a former way of life. Death as a literal thing can also be beautiful. When someone has been battling an illness or when someone is at peace when they pass, while sad for those of us who remain there is a type of comfort knowing that the person who passed is no longer suffering. Death itself is a transition from this world to the next. If you've ever encountered a spirit or saw what you believe to be a message from someone who had passed, then you know that death is simply a transformation and those that have passed are always with us, and that is a beautiful thing.

Using Horror to send a Positive Message

I wrote a short story that I turned into a short video, called The Markings we earn. This story is about scars. Originally I was only thinking about physical scars but then I realized that people often carry emotional scars as well and this story actually fit both. The scars we wear are from living life. They are reminders that we did live, we had adventures and sometimes those scars may not always represent something good, However, those scars we received that were from a time that may not have been so great, those scars are reminders that we survived and that we are strong. There is a beauty in this that I can't fully put into words, but it is there. There is also comfort in knowing that for each scar, good or bad, you survived, you're still here. That is a testament to strength. This is the positive message that a horror story can send if done right.

In conclusion

Horror is what we make it, We can use it as a moral warning, a survival guide in case we encounter a killer in the woods, for laughs to teach a lesson about never taking life too seriously or finding the humor in a bad situation. Most importantly, we can use horror to show others that despite whatever scars they wear that they too are beautiful and they are not alone.
